Tasty delicacies from the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei
On a tour through the Schlei and Baltic Sea region, you soon realise that the focus is on regionality. Cows and Galloway cattle can be seen on every corner sharing the lush green.
Contemplative cafés offer a variety of home-made cakes and if you want to take home rural delicacies, you can get a wide range of products such as meat, vegetables, marmalade and honey in farm shops and weekly markets for reasonable producer prices. Products out of the water also find their way regularly onto your plate. In the harbours, many fishermen offer their catch directly from their boats – this is as fresh as it gets!
With this wide range of local products, it's no wonder that an association was founded in Schleswig-Holstein which dedicates its time to great and regional taste. It's called FEINHEIMISCH and it's campaigning for the conscious handling of groceries and regional culinary delights.
On some menus, you will discover interesting terms such as "Angelner Sattelschwein" (a domestic pork), "Labskaus" (lobscouse), "Rübenmus" (rutabaga purée) and "Schnüsch" (a vegetable soup) which may puzzle you.
Even on the beverage list you can find the interesting sounding liquid "Möwenschiss" (seagull crap).
