A floral yellow fever
When the Schlei region shines yellow
If we had to describe the region with colours, it would be the lush green of the hills, forests and meadows, the sparkling blue of the Baltic Sea and the Schlei, but most of all the bright yellow colour of the rape fields. Every year at the end of April and the beginning of May the floral "yellow fever" breaks out. The idyllic scenery is interspersed with magnificent yellow patches which are particularly characteristic for this landscape.
When the rape is in full bloom, a unique scent whiffs through the region. Connoisseurs use this time of the year for a short trip to the Schlei. While everything is in bloom and magnificent scents evolve, an extensive hike or cycling tour is one special experience. The Ostseefjord-Schlei bike (Baltic Sea fjord Schlei bike) in rape yellow colour which is available at many bike rentals is the ideal vehicle for such a tour. Get started, follow your nose and enjoy nature at its best. The number of rape fields and the time of the blooming stage can vary of course but in light of past experience May is the best time to witness this natural spectacle.
On a cycling or hiking tour, the fields are not long in coming – they can already be seen from afar. You can also experience this blaze of colour during a boat tour or on the Angeln steam train. Simply get on board on one of the excursion boats or on the romantic Angeln steam train and enjoy the colourful landscape.
