Gottorf Castle in SchleswigA museum inside a castle
A lot more than just a museum
Gottorf Castle – the 15th century white, magnificent building at the entrance of Schleswig – was once the residence for the Dukes of Gottorp. They were the reason why Schleswig became the cultural centre of Northern Europe in the 16th and 17th century.
When you enter the castle island you can adumbrate what it looked like here during the Baroque period. Today, the Schleswig-Holstein state museum for art and archaeology are located inside the Gottorf Castle.
One of the most popular exhibits is the bog bodies in the Ice-Age exhibition and the Nydam Boat. The Gothic sculptures and Renaissance paintings also play a major role in Gottorf Castle. Experience an exciting journey through art and culture history from the 11th century to the 20th century.
Many media presentations emphasise the versatile experience of the museum and still manage to fit perfectly in the historical atmosphere.
The annual Gottorf market with its regional products and the largest market for organic products in Schleswig-Holstein just outside the castle island are definitely worth a visit. Children especially enjoy the numerous holiday fun activities brought annually by the Gottorf Castle Foundation during the holiday season. Learn more about it in our events calendar.
