The Museum for Outsiderkunst
Where disabled people are creative
People with disabilities often live on the edge of our society. They are rarely noticed or taken seriously but they very often bear inside a high level of creativity. Instead of voices they use art as a way to express themselves and display yearnings, fears and visions in a remarkable manner simply because they have a different point of view.
In temporary exhibitions, you can view works of art by people living on the edge of our society. Mental and emotional disabilities denounced them as outsiders. Art becomes an instrument of speech informing about yearnings, fears and visions and offers the viewer a new perspective.
Quite central at the beginning of Schleswig's pedestrian zone the museum is located in the west wing of the former Präsidentenkloster (governor’s monastery). For a greater acceptance in Outsiderkunst and to break down the barriers within society, the idea of the Museum of Outsider Art was born.
