Historical Information

The tourist information above the roofs of Kappeln

In the past, the grain of the peasants from the region was ground here in the Dutch Amanda mill, but in 1964, the blades and wind rose of the mill were dismantled for safety reasons.

The wind energy produced by the mill was once used to operate the mill and sawmill. As a result, the mill Amanda in Kappeln was the only combined gristmill and sawmill in Schleswig-Holstein.

After the restoration of the sawmill in 1997, it has been operated by Kappelner Werkstätten. To this day, there are benches, nest boxes for birds and other beautiful objects made of wood, which can be purchased here.

In the main building, you will now find the tourist information office of Kappeln, where you can get information about the port city and its surroundings. Exhibitions from the former Schlei-museum complete the beautiful, historic atmosphere in the mill. The entrance to the mill is, of course, free of charge. In good weather, it is advisable to go out to the gallery of the mill. From there, you have the best overview of the small harbour town at the Schlei.

On the third floor of the Amanda mill, you will find a very special highlight: The wedding room. If you are interested in having a wedding in this unique atmosphere, please contact the local office at the town hall in Kappeln, Phone: +49 4642 – 1830

The Amanda mill can be found on the outskirts of Kappeln. Leave the city centre on Schmiedestraße and pass the Kunsthaus Hänisch. There, turn into Gerichtsstraße and turn into Schleswiger Straße at the end of the main road.
